Tips for Getting More Media Coverage

Political strategist Abhi Rahman was a member of Barack Obama's reelection campaign and the campaigns of other prominent United States politicians. Most recently, Abhi Rahman worked as the communications director in the reelection campaign of Representative Josh Gottheimer to the United States House of Representatives. 

The publishing industry has rapidly changed since the widespread adoption of web-based news. While some old-school public relations strategies are still useful, many new ways of getting media coverage have developed. Here are some tips for getting more media coverage:

1. Share information online and on social media. A recent study showed that 83 percent of journalists use search engines and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to find stories.

2. Start relationships with the media before you need coverage. Doing so builds trust and helps you receive coverage later.

3. Call a publication before you send out a press release. This may help you get your foot in the door.
